Description

Soil and water, the essential sources to life, are under great pressure due to inadequate management, intensive use and climate change. Small water retention measures protect and enhance the water retention potential of soils, reduce and prevent soil erosion and movement, prevent nutrient wash off, improve the quality of water resources and the biodiversity of agro-ecosystems, and mitigate climate change, by allowing water retention during wet periods and enhancing its availability in dry periods. The project will focus on small agricultural water retention measures. In searching for optimal solutions, we will rely on field and laboratory analyses, computer modelling, evaluation of the effectiveness of measures, optimization of scenarios, decision tree analysis and stakeholder support.

Main goals

The main objective of the study is to examine the impact of climate change on economically sustainable water management in agricultural soils, and on soil management in the selected river basins, using small water retention and soil erosion prevention measures, in order to adapt the agricultural sector to new climate and environmental conditions.
