Description:

Effective management in the field of freshwater fisheries is possible with the support and use of data sources, information technologies and tools. One of the tools used by freshwater fisheries managers and the experts of the Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia to support the implementation of fisheries management is RIBKAT, which is part of the fisheries cadastre. The establishment and management of a comprehensive fisheries information system is a public task of the Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia, therefore it is of wider social importance. RIBKAT contains various data and types of data that are acquired, stored, maintained and used by different users. The RIBKAT information system enables the preparation, processing and archiving of data on the implementation of freshwater fisheries management, as well as the preparation of various analyses and reports within the framework of the public service. The application is publicly available and intended for use by the general public for various purposes; the data is used for professional and research purposes. In the initial phase of the project, we will identify the users and their expectations and ideas regarding the functionality of RIBKAT. The inclusion of stakeholders (users) in the process will help to identify the key deficiencies of the information system (databases and user applications). After the analysis phase of the existing system, the preparation of a functional specification will follow, which includes the development of a new data model, the inclusion of modern information technologies, spatial data and geoinformation tools, as well as the creation of an interface for effective process support.

Main Goals:

The main goal of the project is the preparation of the RIBKAT functional specification, which will include a description of the content, method of establishing and operating the database, the concept of the appearance of the web application to support data entry and othermanagement processes and interactions with users. The functional specification represents the basis for further development of the RIBKAT data system with an emphasis on a good user experience.

Work Packages:

The project consists of six work packages (WPs), as follows:

WP 1: Identification and definition of RIBKAT users’ needs;
WP2: Analysis of the existing system;
WP3: Preparation of the concept for the renovation of RIBKAT;
WP4: Implementation of workshops with users;
WP5: Preparation of RIBKAT functional specification;
WP6: Dissemination of project results to key stakeholders
